RIMOWA LUGGAGE Rimowa’s reputation for creating quality, lightweight luggage dates back to 1898 when Paul Morszeck began manufacturing luggage in the Cologne region of Germany. The first luggage was constructed from wood at the Kofferfabrik Paul Morszek factory. Early on, Morszeck recognized a need for lighter, more portable luggage. However, it was not until 1937 that Paul’s son, Richard, began using aluminum, which was a relatively new material that was first being used in the fuselage of German airplanes. But Rimowa’s most recognized feature became its ribbed siding which was introduced in 1950. Shortly after that, Richard officially changed the company’s name to Rimowa. Bringing together the first two letters of each word of his name and that of the German word “warenzeichen”, which translates in English as “trademark”. Rimowa became an industry leader in its quest for new materials. In 1976, Rimowa offered waterproof suitcases and then in 2000 it introduced to world travelers the polycarbonate suitcase made from recyclable materials. They were the first manufacturers to use this high-tech material for luggage travel bags. Rimowa continues to look for new ways to construct cases that will be durable and lightweight. Rimowa moved their facilities to Ontario, Canada in 2008. The Morszeck family continues to own and operate Rimowa.
