We left early this morning for Ngorongoro Crater, sightseeing a little along the way, but mostly driving hard to get to our destination by dinnertime. The drive was an extremely long 8-9 hours on a rough, bumpy road the entire way. It was a tough drive for us, but even more so for our driver Daniel.
It was interesting to pass out of the Serengeti, which was dry in the central part we were driving through, to Ngorongoro, which was surrounded by mountains and lush, green trees. Along the way we passed small villages of the tribe Masai. We also passed many of the Masai people walking along the road herding cattle or goats. They are distinctive in that they all wear some type of red plaid cape around their shoulders so that they can be seen in the landscape. They also shave their heads and have large holes in their ears. We will be visiting a Masai village tomorrow and have many questions.
We were happy to finally reach our amazing lodge, the Ngorongoro Sopa, high up in the mountains, with an incredible view of the crater. The Sopa is a beautiful place and we enjoyed it, but did not unpack as we were leaving at 6 am for the day and on to the Ngorongoro Oldeani.
