“Mom! Look…that’s a Rimowa,” said my ten year old proudly, as he watched the hit TV show CSI Miami. Recognize that I work for a luggage company and my kids frequently review the email blasts and print ads that I create for Irv’s Luggage huge selection of luggage, laptop cases, messenger bags and the like. But, even I was stunned, when the kid called out ‘Rimowa’.  And, there it was… Lawrence Fishburne (who is actually from another CSI show and not the Miami version) is carrying an aluminum laptop case, which by its distinct markings is clearly a Rimowa. The distinctive ‘ribbing’ or ‘grooves’ of a Rimowa make it the business case or attaché that can be identified anywhere.

This isn’t the first time that Rimowa has been spotted on the screen: Fred Clause, Hellboys, Live Free or Die Hard, Get Smart, Iron Man, Oceans 11, Made of Honor are just a few of Rimowa’s recent film adventures. We watch very little television; so spotting a Rimowa is a big adventure for the kid. These are distinctive looking cases and may seem unusual, but they consistently get very high customer reviews. What’s scary to me is that my ten year old could actually identify a Rimowa verses the Zero Haliburton metal business cases or TZ Cases. Oh well, guess the kid is a little too well versed on luggage and business cases. It’s kind of sad that he can actually distinguish between Zero Haliburton and Rimowa at such a young age. Wish he could do the same for remembering how to figure out exponents and negative exponents. Then again, maybe CSI could do a math segment.

It’s my favorite time of the year…lots of great after-Christmas sales. All those wonderful items that were full price in December, have suddenly found a home on the sale shelf. So, why am I interested? New to Irv’s Luggage this season is a luggage collection from Kathy Van Zeeland. Now you’ve likely seen the Kathy Van Zeeland collections of handbags. Although I am not a fan of television and have never even seen the shopping network, rumor has it that KVZeeland offers her handbags on QVC. However, what I am intrigued by is the Kathy Van Zeeland luggage collection.

Definitely ladies luggage… this line of carry-on luggage, wheeled luggage, luggage sets and travel totes has been clearly designed for women travelers. According to Kathy Van Zeeland, her product is high quality, use the best materials available and is affordably priced. Good marketing hype. What I like is the elegant and stylish design (and the really affordable price doesn’t hurt).

The KVZ styles include: Heartbeat, Python, Family Jewels, Disco, Violet Multi and Brocade. Wow. I have a hard time deciding between the Violet Multi and the Python. Maybe it’s just related to my mood. The Python is a little scary, but beautiful and ultimately elegant. Note the intimate design and the realistic look and feel. It comes in the traditional color of metallic bone – which I think is the most realistic; and also fuchsia and lapis. I’ve never seen a fuchsia or lapis python, but then again, I’m from suburbia and don’t get out much. This is one piece of luggage with an unmistakable design and travelers will certainly be able to pick it out at the luggage carousel.

My other favorite design is the Violet Multi. This is an original design with multiple shades of violet, purple and some hues of blue. Imagine a bunch of butterfly on drugs. Wow.

All the Kathy Van Zeeland wheeled luggage comes with everything you’d expect from a good brand of luggage: in-line skate wheels, telescoping handles, lots of perfectly placed pockets and – unique to KVZ is the ‘I’m Yours’ luggage tag.

Personally, I really liked the ‘old’ Centerline Hovercraft from Eagle Creek. It was the most lightweight and spacious luggage, and just seemed to have all the little smart travel features that made my life on the road so much easier. I was less than thrilled to hear that Eagle Creek was discontinuing the ‘old’ Hovercraft in favor of a new design. I liked the fact that I could open the main part like a book. That made it really easy to pack. The compression straps held all my items in place, so no matter how my Hovercraft was tossed around at the airport, my belongings stayed intact. But it was the little features that really made the ‘old’ Hovercraft so special. But, good bye, ‘old’ Hovercraft; the new Hovercraft HC2 has landed. Given my prejudice though, it might be hard to actually accept the new Hovercraft.

Like lots of college kids, I opted one year to skip the traditional summer job and decided instead to backpack through Europe. Ok, so I’m addicted to a silly TV game show…Deal or No Deal. There is a bit of intrigue, risk, misfortune and humor. What more could we ask for?             A few nights ago during an average rainy night, I sat home with some friends and watched the movie Live Free or Die Hard. I had not seen any of the other movies in the series, but I like Bruce Willis and Justin Long and decided to give it a shot. As expected the movie was full of action, as there were car and helicopter chases, extensive fight scenes, and many escapes from near death falls and collisions. There was one thing, however, that caught my eye that I never expected to see in the movie: a Rimowa  laptop case. The Rimowa logo was clearly printed on the hard-sided laptop case. I was quick to point out the observation to my friends and they couldn’t have cared less. I was very pleased with my find and couldn’t help but be a little more attentive the rest of the movie for other luggage brands that may have popped up.

            For some people finding math in everyday life gets them excited. For others its dogs or clothing. For me, it’s luggage. Not only was the movie exciting and entertaining, but finding the piece of luggage gave me a sense of accomplishment that brought a little light to a gloomy rainy night. My greatest hope, though, is that next time maybe the hero could carry the Rimowa and not the villain.

"Video: The MagShoe Means Shoes Stay on at Airport Security"

Whoo-hoo!!!

Of course, this doesn't mean we have this sweet little piece of technology installed at American airports yet, but if the international airport in Tel Aviv (a place that doesn't mess around with security risk) trusts the technology, surely it will be hitting our shores anyday now. (please, please, please!!!)

It seems the airline industry and TSA has genuinely been trying to ease the burden airline security lines have become in US airports on already harried passengers. The TSA has worked with luggage and luggage accessory makers to make available products that ease the security process. Passengers worried about securing their items can use TSA approved locks, which are easily opened by security personnel, but no one else. Even more impressive are TSA approved laptop bags, which are hugely popular now, and yes, I have gone on at length in previous posts about their usefulness! How can I not? Being able to just send your laptop case through security without unpacking it means fewer computers damaged and stolen, and less time spent futzing with electronics.

Another bit of promising news -- the TSA has stated it plans to relax regulations on cosmetics liquid container sizes by the end of 2009 due to better X-ray equipment that can more accurately determine what you've got in those suspicious bottles. Many airports have also implemented express lines for business travelers who travel light, steering families with children and folks who are new to the process over to the "10 items or more" lines.

All this is good news, and if we can add MagShoe to that growing list of security line-easers, it will be great news! Currently, having to take one's shoes off is a weak link in the puzzle, making line waits much longer than they would otherwise be. So here's kudos to the TSA for advances already made, and a little encouragement to saunter on over to Tel Aviv, and check out the MagShoe, and maybe bring one back!

The numbers in the EPA report are grim, but as cruising is increasing in popularity, so are more eco-friendly options. It's worth doing a little research so you can set sail with a clean conscience, and keep those places you're hoping to see on holiday around for a while longer.

Nifty, huh? I actually recently learned that Ireland is one of the premier golfing destinations in the world, with courses challenging enough to make a grown man (or woman!) cry. I'm not a golfer myself, but can appreciate the sport, and like the gear that accompanies it. I'd just be happy to pack up my Tumi with camera and leisure wear, and explore the green coast of Ireland, though, and will someday soon! In the meantime, though --

My own surprise at Utah topping the list made me stop and consider my own bias. I tend to think of destinations in terms of travel, but traveling somewhere and living somewhere aren't necessesarily the same thing. Hawaii seems to have a corner on both markets, but it seems to be lonely in that position. According to a January report from U.S. News, two Hawaiian destinations are in the top 10 most popular domestic destinations of 2009. Topping that list, however, are Las Vegas and Orlando. I'm sad to say, Nevada doesn't rank so high on the Well-Being Index (38th to be exact) and Florida hovers right in the middle at 30th. New York is also in the top ten of places to travel, but ranks low on the Well-Being Index.

What makes a place nice to visit, but less pleasant to live in? You always hear about the value of experiencing a place through the eyes of a local, but would you really want to go to Las Vegas and side-step the glitz to experience its local underbelly? How would the most popular international travel destinations rank on the Well-Being index?  

It's all speculation--even the "Well-Being Index" itself. I mean, how do you accurately  measure happiness anyway, especially with such a slender sampling?  But it does make you wonder. How happy is your state, and what makes it so? Is your state a popular travel destination? Tell me about it!

In 1991, Steves started producing TV shows about European destinations using his own funding, and gave them to public television stations for free. I recently ran across a stack of business cards collected at a conference I attended a couple of months ago, and it got me thinking about business card etiquette. While at the conference, I thought nothing of exchanging cards with folks during friendly casual meetings, and pocketing their proffered cards with little more than a glance. Sometimes they, or I, would scribble some extra info on the back that was pertinent to the meeting, and sometimes I was eager to get the cards, but mostly, it was just an exercise in polite routine. The real meat of the meeting was in the face to face contact.

The etiquette of business card exchanges are radically different in the US than in Asia and some other countries. About a year ago I did business with a company out of Korea, and had to research Korean business etiquette. One of the first things I learned about was the importance of the business card, which, I now understand, is pretty standard across most of Asia.

In many Asian countries, the business card is seen as an extension of the individual, and should be treated with respect. In Korea, you present the card with both hands, offering a polite nod. When receiving the card, you receive it with a nod, look at it (but not for too long!), then carefully put it away. And then there's a whole nother level of etiquette concerning who should exchanges cards depending on seniority. Curious, I checked out the etiquette in a few other countries. In Japan, I learned, it's even more ceremonial--probably more so than in any other nation. You receive the card with both hands, bow, and express gratitude. You carefully examine the card and comment on it, even if only to verify the information, and only then can you put it away. You should never shove it in your pocket though, always in a holder, and never write on the blank areas. In India, you should use your right hand to exchange cards, and it's often done in even non-business type settings. Unlike the US where appending university degress and honors to your name (unless it's Dr.) can seem a bit gauche, it's entirely appropriate in India.

Every country has their own set of rules on conducting business, so do your homework first. And get a nice business card case. Haven't seen a place yet where that's considered in bad taste!

The economy has created a new breed of traveler called the flashpacker. Basically, it's a traveler who employs the tried and true budget-travel tricks of a traditional backpacker, but steers clear of hostels and opts instead for private (but affordable) accomodation. This may be good news for companies such as Eagle Creek and The Northface who produce quality packs and gear targeted at the backpacking demographic.

High-speed rail is also on the rise, partially because of the economy and the need for better mass transit, but also for sheer convenience. More than 16,000 miles of new service are slated for completion by 2020 or so, in Europe, Asia, and the US.

Not all the 2009 travel trends are a product of a recession, however. Some are just the product of cool technology! Nikon, ever the banner-bearer of photographic innovation, brilliantly introduced a digital SLR to a GPS unit, and the Coolpix P6000 was born. No longer do you have to flip through gigs of vacation photos, vainly trying to figure out what was taken where. Now you can post and geo-tag your shots on Google Earth.

Other innovations are certainly in the works. Hear of anything -- the next superstrong, superlight luggage innovation, for example -- let us know!

Everyone agreed aluminum cases are superior in their durability and protective qualities. Most aluminum luggage (and even just luggage components on other brands) these days are crafted with aircraft grade aluminum. I was reading about the manufacturing process of a Zero Halliburton case, one of the premier makers of aluminum cases, and have to say it's pretty impressive. They start with a two-ton coil of aircraft grade aluminum, then "deep draw" it over steel dies using 440 tons of pressure (not really sure what this means, but it sounds cool). By doing this, they say, the molecular structure of the metal changes, and results in a case that's wrinkle- and distortion-free. After that, they heat the case to over 1000 degrees Farenheit, then quickly cool it to make it super strong. Then the case is buffed and electrochemically anodized. Zero Halliburton cases are so cool, James Bond used one in his last film! Folks on the forum also mentioned Rimowa as making a great aluminum case.

The biggest drawback to aluminum hardside luggage, as the forum-folk saw it, was how it came back on the carousel after rough handling by airline personnel. How painful it must be to see that shiny new case come back scuffed and scratched, a little worse for the wear! Another problem is that it looks high-end, and is therefore more likely to be stolen, and singled out for security searches. Sigh, the travails of being fashion-forward.

On the flip side of all this nay-saying, the people who loved their aluminum hardside luggage liked the look of a well-worn case. A "patina" several of them used, saying they actually liked the look of the case better after a few times around the world. And anyway, nothing would make them give up the superior protection of a durable aluminum case.

So there it is, and I've solved nothing! I did, however, learn an interesting factoid about aluminum. At one time, aluminum was more valuable than silver, gold, or even platinum. It doesn't occur in its pure form naturally, but must be extracted from various ores (first done in 1825), which made it precious. There's a story that Napoleon III once gave a huge banquet where the VIP guests received utensils made of aluminum, while everyone else had to make do with gold. The capstone of the Washington Monument was also made of aluminum.

I'd be interested to learn what other people's experiences with aluminum cases have been!

Love it when I get to talk about a funky, cool new product. International Traveller has been making some beautiful hardside luggage for a while now. These cases are crafted of super lightweight ABS/polycarbonate and have a special expansion section so you get the flexible expansion of a softside, without sacrificing the protection of a hardside case. They also have curved internal aluminum handles that roll more easily, and corner transparent ball bearing wheels.

So what's new? They now come in giraffe print! And that makes me happy. It's the little things, you know?

Patent leather is a home-grown invention, developed by the Newark inventor, Seth Boyden in 1818, but not actually produced until 1819. The original process used a linseed oil-based lacquer coating, but modern patent leather usually has a plastic coating. The plastic finish produces a similar effect, but with considerably less time and cost, which means more items are affordable. In addition to having a glassy finish, patent leather is also fairly waterproof and flexible.

Remember those patent-leather Mary Janes you had growing up, girls? You were so proud of them, and so careful not to scuff that high polish. And boys, patent leather was for you too, giving you the style of a dandy in your super shiny dress shoes. Today, patent leather is still used in dress, dance, and uniform shoes, as well as handbags, wallets, and even some limited-edition sneakers. First I checked out the Pathfinder Compubrief Checkpoint Friendly Laptop cases. Checkpoint Friendly cases are a big thing now, allowing you to pretty much sail through airport security checkpoints (sail, that is, after virtually disrobing). Pathfinder bags are super nice, made of rugged materials, and have lots of nifty features such as file divider compartments, and other creatively designed organizational pockets. Realistically, however, I don't fly that often. Most of my laptop toting is the daily schlepping of it to the coffee shop, so I decided to focus more directly on that need.

I'm lucky enough to live in a town where I can get around easily on bike. I love taking advantage of that, and using my bike for daily commutes to and from the coffee shop (i.e. my office). As such, however, I need a laptop bag that's bike friendly. As much as I like the Pathfinder, it only has one shoulder strap, which is less than ideal when pedal-powering your way around town. I need a backpack, so decided to turn to someone who really knows backpacks -- The North Face.

Living in a mountain town, I'm no stranger to The North Face brand. It's everywhere -- on shirts, pants, packs, caps, jackets, and outdoor gear. With such an emphasis on products for outdoor adventure -- their motto is, after all, "Never Stop Exploring!" -- I wouldn't have immediately thought they'd carry laptop backpacks. But I suppose adventure doesn't have to stop at the trail -- the urban jungle is full of perils that require rugged gear, too.

After sorting through the options, I've narrowed it down to three Northface options: The Recon, the Heckler, and the Yavapai backpacks. The Recon is my favorite aesthetically, because I can get it in purple. It also features a hydration port, in addition to the side water-bottle pockets. The Heckler doesn't feature a hydration port, but it does have the side water-bottle pockets, a removeable waist belt, and has a front stash pocket with an audio port for plugging in and tuning out. The Yavapai is a more simple bag, which is also appealing, but still has water-bottle pockets, organizational pockets, and utility loops for ease of packing up. All of the bags feature reflective hits, comfortable back panels, sturdy top carry handles, and a large main compartment with a padded laptop sleeve.

After weighing the options, I think I've decided on....which one?! Can you guess?

This was a total bummer for some folks. Not that most luggage locks are terribly sturdy, but they do offer a little extra security and peace of mind when traveling, and keep your bag from accidentally unzipping in transit.

To meet the needs of those travelers who miss being able to lock up their luggage from unscrupulous sticky fingers, the TSA began working with a few different companies to develop locks that can be opened by security officers using universal master keys, while keeping the unitiated at bay. Look for either of these symbols to make sure you have a TSA approved lock!

As the New Year draws to a close, people are shifting into nostalgia mode, remembering the best and worst of the year, and taking long strolls down that well-trod memory lane. Maybe that's what starting me thinking about the history of luggage. Or maybe it was watching a special on early European migrations, and thinking how if they only had Tumi luggage systems, and modern hydration systems, those trips might have been a lot less arduous.

I'm only half kidding on that last part. It did get me thinking about the evolution of travel luggage. Long ago (really, not even THAT long ago), folks didn't have the luxury of high-density ballistic nylon bags on light aluminum alloy frames, or injection molded polyproplyene hard cases, or even ergonimic straps and handles and high-performance wheels. They had hand-woven baskets, animal-hide bags, wooden boxes, or just yards of cloth gathered around a pile of belongings. And yet, they somehow managed to travel, migrate, and move around until practically every corner of the globe was covered.

With the advent of the Industrial Revolution, train tracks started criss-crossing the landscape, and ocean steamers made it possible for even average Joe's, who didn't have the good fortune of being commissioned by the Queen to go searching for fame and fortune on their big fat sailboats, to find their way across the Big Blue, thousands of miles away. Travel changed, and so did the need for a better system of luggage.

Steamer trunks became the name of the game in the late 18th century, and were carried wide and far by travelers well into the 20th century. They were sturdy chests, crafted usually of pine, and then covered with leather, or canvas, or some other protective and decorative material. They were big, too, usually measuring about 1.5 meters wide, and a half meter deep and high. Needless to say, these bad boys would cost a pretty penny to send through on today's weight-restriction-minded airlines, but they were perfect for the hard knocks ocean and train travel offered its freight.

Steamer trunks are still being made and have come a long way, but they're by no means the norm these days. The advent of plane travel really ushered in a new attitude towards personal luggage, along with the surge in the number of travelers who didn't have their own servants to schlep their stuff around for them. Lighter and easier to handle became the ideal, and has pretty much remained so to this day.

What amazes me is how we've continually found ways to better the previous generation of luggage. The bags and cases on the market today are stronger, better organized, easier to negotiate, and lighter than ever before, and will somehow, become even more so in five years! What's next I wonder? Anti-gravity devices that attach to your bag to make it completely weightless? How cool would that be! Or maybe when commercial space flights become a norm (and I have no doubt that they will -- there's already a facility for them being built in New Mexico) that will usher in an altogether new set of goals in personal luggage perfection.

I don't know what's next, but I am seriously looking forward to the ride!

What would Santa carry? As the big day approaches for the fat man's debut, I've been thinking about what the old

Would it be hard-sided or soft-sided? I'm thinking soft-sided because it's more velvet sac like, more familiar. Thankfully, today's soft-sided options are a little more sturdy, though. I've already blogged on finding wallet-friendly gifts, so here's a few ideas for cutting corners in the travel department.

1) Know when to book. The website farecast.live.com is a great tool for predicting whether or not a fare is likely to go up or down, so you know whether to book now or later.

2) Check for airfares late Tuesday night. Discount airfare sites get their deals in the wee hours of the morning on Wednesday, so grab them while they're hot. Kayak.com is an excellent resource, scouring almost 150 sites to find the best deals.

3) Plan your fuel stops. If you're driving instead of flying, use a site such as gasbuddy.com. The site lets you map gas prices along your route, and finds you the cheapest fuel stops in any given area. And while we're on the road, one small blessing to be grateful for--the average price of regular gasoline is today more than $1 cheaper per gallon than it was at this same time last year. Whoo-hoo!

4) Maximize your packing power with a full luggage set. Luggage sets pack a lot of value (pardon the pun) if you're buying on a budget, and you get the added bonus of everything matching! This is an important move to

 1) aid families who can't help but move through the line slowly with unpredictable kids and multiple bags

2) keep folks who are a little less burdened, but tight on time, moving through the security line quickly and happily.

But here's more good news! In addition to the family lanes, the government expects to soon revisit the rule on how many ounces of lotions and potions you can bring on board. Apparently, scientists have been hard at work developing software for X-ray machines that can tell the difference from a bottle of shampoo and a botttle of liquid explosives.

I'm thrilled to see the TSA moving toward a happier security check-point experience, which will inevitably lead to happier travelers. You can further improve the check-point experience with TSA approved (not endorsed but approved) laptop cases. These laptop cases are sweeping the industry, and all the major brands are making them now.

Here's how they work. Slide your laptop into one of the Checkpoint friendly cases, and it doesn't have to leave the secure confines of  your case. That means less to contend with in the security check-point line, and less worry about your laptop sitting on the other side of the X-ray belt, while you're still trying to get through the metal detector.

Travel is on the brain for a lot of folks as Thanksgiving rapidly approaches. Because more and more folks are avoiding checking bags these days, opting instead to stuff everything they own into a tiny carry-on bag, I thought a posting about packing smart might be in order.

There are lots of little things you can do to organize as you pack so that 1) you don't arrive at your destination looking like you're trying to impersonate a raisin (you know, all the wrinkles...) and 2) you don't discover you inadvertently left your contacts or prescription meds or some other important item sitting at home after you've already reached your destination.

Packing accessories are huge right now, and a great place to start on your road to organization nirvana. Eagle Creek has a full line of packing cubes and packing folders that help to minimize wrinkling and maximize space. The Eagle Creek Pack-It Folder has a folding board and stain and water repellent lining, and holds up to 7 business shirts, keeping them crisp and ready for the board meeting.

How you pack your bag also matters. Start by laying out everything you'll need ahead of time. If you grab things as you pack, you're bound to forget something, and you'll pack far less efficiently. Once you have it all laid out (envelopes and cubes already packed!) start by putting the heaviest items at the bottom of the bag. This way, your bag is not top heavy, and you'll lessen the chance of crushing clothing and lighter items.

As a final thought, if you are carrying your bag on, make sure your toiletry bag is security check-point ready, and easy to access. Use something like the TSA compliant Eagle Creek or Tumi bottle kit, which come in a reusable quart-sized bag and hold just the right amount of liquid.

If you were a piece of luggage, what would you be? The question occurred to me this weekend as I was picking up a friend at the airport. As we waited for her luggage to crest on the baggage carousel, we watched as all kinds of bags made the circuit, picked up by all kinds of people.

A young man in ripped, low-riding jeans, grabbed a large faded duffel, while an older couple nearby collected matching Hartmann tweed bags with leather trim. There were a couple of business types hovering close by on cell phones, one of whom eventually collected a black Samsonite trolley garment bag, while the other grabbed a silver Tumi rolling hardside. The only real surprise was the smartly dressed older gentleman who snagged a dilapidated old suitcase that looked like it might have just arrived from a 50-year delayed flight.

It's official -- no more free baggage flying! Delta announced yesterday they're hopping on the baggage fee carousel. It's now a clean sweep--Delta is the last of the six legacy carriers to implement a fee for the first checked bag. As of December 5, passengers on domestic flights will be charged $15 for the first checked bag, and $25 for the second. Merry Christmas world!

In light of this inevitable, but less than welcome, announcement, seems like the perfect time to talk about the wonderful world of carry-on luggage! So today, I bring you some excellent pieces that also happen to be awesome deals, and all measure in at 45 inches or less, so they fit most airlines' carry-on size restrictions.

• Invest in a Carbon Offset Program. Flying is where the biggest environmental impact sits, but as an international lightrail isn't exactly an option yet, carbon offset programs are an alternative way to lessen the damage. These programs allow folks to reduce the carbon emissions they are responsible for by offsetting, reducing, or displacing CO2 somewhere else where it's more economical to do so. Carbon offsets usually include renewable energy, energy efficiency, and reforestation projects. There are lots of programs to choose from -- check out the list of recommended projects maintained by the Environmental Defense Fund.
  


• Choose a "green hotel". Before you book, ask 1) if the hotel is locally owned and locally staffed, 2) if they have recycling programs, 3) if guests have the option of reusing towels and sheets instead of having them changed every day, 4) if they use low-flow toilets, energy-efficient lighting, or use alternative energy sources like solar power, and 5) if they contribute to the local community. You can also visit a website such as the"Green" Hotels Association to find a good candidate.
  


• Choose environmentally responsible tour operators. Before you book, ask about the size of the tour group (smaller groups usually make less of an impact, and besides, are more enjoyable to be a part of), whether it's led by locals (they have the best insight into the place anyway), and if the operation gives back to the community.
  


• When visiting beautiful natural places, stay on marked trails, don't pick the flowers, and take your trash with you. Just make sure all you leave the place with are photographs, and the items you packed in.
  


• Buy local. Skip Mickie D's and opt for the local joint. You'll get a taste of local cuisine, and support the local economy. Buy local crafts as well, and bypass the imported junk. Besides, local crafts make better gifts and souvenirs. Just avoid items made from endangered animals and plants. You'll usually have them confiscated at customs anyway.
  


• Consider volunteer tourism! Combine seeing a new place with helping out the local population. Voluntourism.org offers ideas on a lot of different trips, guaranteed to give you a side of warm fuzzies.
  

1. Book your flight for non-peak travel times, Mondays-Wednesdays, after the morning business rush, or in the evening.
   


2. Pack more games, snacks, drinks, and activities than you think you'll need--never know when that five-hour delay will hit. Include a variety of activities, including books, travel board games, an MP3 player, DVD player, and a portable video system.
   


3. Tell your child ahead of time what to expect, and keep the commentary going. When checking or screening baggage, reassure him he'll get his belongings back.
   
   


4. Allow extra time at the airport.
   


5. Give your child safety rules, including what to do if you become separated.
   


6. Consider giving your child an "airport allowance." You can pass time at the airport before the flight by visiting shops to find the perfect snack or toy.
   


7. Consider using a child tether, even if you don't normally. It's so easy to be distracted when checking or claiming luggage.
   


8. Take-offs and landings can be painful for children, so bring ear filters, or just encourage your child to swallow by offering drinks, gum, or hard candy.
   


9. Bring toys out one at a time for maximum entertainment value (and minimal clutter!).

• A panel zips up to secure the shoulder and waist straps, making it more air travel friendly. I once reclaimed my backpack from the luggage carousel with a broken chest harness clip, so I offer this from personal experience. Dangling straps are just begging to be snagged and torn in route. The bag also has a side handle making it easy to carry when the straps are zipped away.

I had a dream last night about a luggage party. All the coolest kids were there--Tumi, Samsonite, Travelpro. Even The North Face made an appearance, fresh from an expedition up Mt. Everest. It was the event of the year, everyone representing with their best wheels forward. There were a few stand-out moments.Jack Georges was on the phone half the night, closing some important deal with a big client in Berlin, and left early to fed-ex some important documents. Hartmann and Kenneth Cole got into an argument over the best way to avoid over-sized baggage fees, but Victorinox, always the peacemaker, stepped in, and all three headed to the food table for fondue, laughing about some story involving a pocket knife and an astronaut. Callaway Golf held a crowd of duffel bags transfixed for an hour, offering tips and telling tales about driving ranges across the globe. Lodis kept it low-key and chic, while Goodhope and Velocity did a rocking rendition of "Leaving on a Jet Plane" that brought the house down. Eagle Creek, JanSport, and High Sierra huddled in a corner swapping backpacking in Asia stories most of the night, while American Tourister wouldn't shut up about a recent trip to Paris.

The evening finally ended when the party was raided by a team of security officials armed with metal detectors and sniffer dogs. Apparently, a jealous closet organizer that wasn't invited to the shindig called in a noise complaint. Within 15 minutes, the bay went from stuffed to empty, with nothing but a few destination tags and a broken wheel or two left behind. Everyone's still talking about the party, though, swapping stories that get bigger with each telling. What does your luggage say?

• Use a passport wallet to hold your important documents (passport, travelers checks, credit cards), and keep it hidden from view under your jacket, or better yet, in a hotel safe. There are many to choose from—I especially like the Travelon ID and Boarding Pass Holder, which lies flat under a shirt with a long strap and the Ellington Airport Express, which is a little bulkier, but well organized, and easy to keep an eye on. Carry another bag or wallet for your walking around money. That way, it′s easy to access money without digging, but it won′t ruin your trip if it′s stolen.
  


• Before you leave, make copies of your passport, birth certificate, and credit cards, and copy down the serial numbers on the camera and video equipment you bring. Store these documents in a safe place in your luggage, but separate from the originals. Write down the phone numbers for your credit cards as well so you have them on hand just in case, as well as the location of the nearest embassy to your travel destination, especially if the local population doesn′t speak English. If your passport is stolen, having a copy of both it and your birth certificate will make things easier. Having your credit card numbers on hand will help in cancelling them if you need to.

Still relatively new to the market is a TSA check-point friendly cases which allow you to keep your laptop  in the case - never exposed to the prying eyes of would-be thieves.

TSA approved (there’s a little yellow label on the side that says so!), this bag can slide through the x-ray machine without requiring you to take your laptop out of the case.  More manufacturers are recognizing the trend. Victorinox, Briggs & Riley, Samsonite, McKlein and Tumi are just a few of the brands offering some form of checkpoint friendly laptop cases. It's definitely a step in the right direction. Anything that makes the whole security process easier is great.

• 3-1-1 for carry-ons = 3 ounce bottle or less (by volume); 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin. One-quart bag per person limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring. 3 oz. container size is a security measure.
  


• Consolidate bottles into one bag and X-ray separately to speed screening.
  


• Be prepared. Each time TSA searches a carry-on it slows down the line. Practicing 3-1-1 will ensure a faster and easier checkpoint experience.
  


• 3-1-1 is for short trips. If in doubt, put your liquids in checked luggage.
  


• Declare larger liquids. Medications, baby formula and food, breast milk, and juice are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding three ounces and are not required to be in the zip-top bag. Declare these items for inspection at the checkpoint.
  

• U.S. citizens ages 19 and older must present documentation that proves both identity and citizenship. Identification documents must include a photo, name and date of birth.
  


• Children ages 18 and under will only be required to present proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.
