Air Travel...the InFlight Comforts - It used to be Free!

Another airline announced yet another charge for their in-flight service. A major American airline (read between the lines) just announced that passengers could purchase their very own travel blanket for a mere $8. Wow. Now, that’s in addition to the charges for soda, snacks, lunch, movies, headphones, extra baggage, overweight baggage and whatever else for your in-flight travel.

Airlines have been deeply hurt by a number of factors: recession, the World Trade Center bombings, seemingly endless airport security, uncontrolled oil prices, all the travel restrictions and just the overall stinky economy. This last foray into moneymaking adventures for the airlines is ridiculous. Watch now, to see if the same airline lowers the temperature in the cabin to a point where you’ll have to purchase a blanket just to survive the trip.

I don’t really care about the travel blanket. I care about the symbol that it represents. Personally, I’d rather the airline raise it’s fare another $10 and give me a soft drink and maybe even a bag of peanuts and, yes, maybe a blanket if I need it. Maybe with an extra Alexander Hamilton in their coffers, they could actually make me feel like it’s luxurious to fly. Doubt that will happen anytime soon. So, if you’re interested in a lovely travel blanket, then get your $8 out. It probably only cost the airline $1 each, so take heart in knowing that you are helping a struggling economy and the struggling airline industry.

Rimowa... A Case Like No Other

“Mom! Look…that’s a Rimowa,” said my ten year old proudly, as he watched the hit TV show CSI Miami. Recognize that I work for a luggage company and my kids frequently review the email blasts and print ads that I create for Irv’s Luggage huge selection of luggage, laptop cases, messenger bags and the like. But, even I was stunned, when the kid called out ‘Rimowa’.  And, there it was… Lawrence Fishburne (who is actually from another CSI show and not the Miami version) is carrying an aluminum laptop case, which by its distinct markings is clearly a Rimowa. The distinctive ‘ribbing’ or ‘grooves’ of a Rimowa make it the business case or attaché that can be identified anywhere.

This isn’t the first time that Rimowa has been spotted on the screen: Fred Clause, Hellboys, Live Free or Die Hard, Get Smart, Iron Man, Oceans 11, Made of Honor are just a few of Rimowa’s recent film adventures. We watch very little television; so spotting a Rimowa is a big adventure for the kid. These are distinctive looking cases and may seem unusual, but they consistently get very high customer reviews. Rimowa owners describe the attaché as ‘lightweight, classic styling and extremely durable’.

Here’s what Rimowa says about their styling… “The classic aluminum luggage in a retro design harks back to the early days of aviation. Polished corners and traditional leather handles give this luggage a character all its own, as well as inviting you on a flight into the past.” Rimowa's aluminum attachés feature a new age design, but are considered classic attachés and business and laptop cases. A distinctive, grooved aluminum exterior rigorously protects the interior contents. Each case has either a luxurious leather or nylon interior and includes an extensive array pockets for storing PDAs, cell phones, planners and the like. The exterior includes a combination lock console with double lock and automatic opener for uncompromising security.

‘Handcraft Meets High Tech’ is Rimowa’s slogan, and helps to shape the companies direction in the luggage industry. Rimowa is a German company, who is among the leading luggage manufacturers in Europe. Rimowa uses innovation, explores the newest materials and is constantly investigating new technologies for its aluminum luggage and business case lines. Rimowa is committed to always searching for ways to make luggage lighter, more durable, and easier to handle to meet the ever evolving demands of today’s travel.

Rimowa has a large line of attachés, notebook or laptop cases and traditional business cases. Rimowa also has an extensive and distinctive luggage line: Salsa, Topas, Bolero and Tango make up Rimowa’s luggage collections. Interestingly, the colors for the Rimowa hard-sided luggage line include: midnight blue, gold, violet, black, gray and brown… all made from durable aluminum or titanium. This is luggage designed to endure the brutalities of travel!

What’s scary to me is that my ten year old could actually identify a Rimowa verses the Zero Haliburton metal business cases or TZ Cases. Note that the Zero Haliburton case is largely known as the ‘Deal or No Deal’ case (and no, we don’t watch Deal or No Deal). Oh well, guess the kid is a little too well versed on luggage and business cases. It’s kind of sad that he can actually distinguish between Zero Haliburton and Rimowa at such a young age. Wish he could do the same for remembering how to figure out exponents and negative exponents. Then again, maybe CSI could do a math segment.

Today’s luggage, laptop cases, briefcases, backpacks and handbags vary in quality and materials used. Most are well made and designed to meet the needs of the average 2010 consumer. Pete Silverman, head of repairs at Irv’s Luggage, commented, " the majority of repairs completed have to do with luggage wheels and luggage pull handles"; they do however perform a variety of other repairs on zippers, tears, pull straps, locks, hinges, clasps, ripped seams as well as repairs on tents, sleeping bags, car top carriers, baseball gloves, jackets, sports accessories and more.  Alex Vetseyl, Irv’s Luggage longtime repair specialist, has been with the company for over twenty years and it is a rear occasion to come across anything that Alex cannot fix!

Per the website: “Many repairs are covered by either manufacturer's warranty or through airline damage reimbursement. Claims with luggage manufacturers are filed on your behalf. Irv’s Luggage also receives calls from Macys, Bloomingdale and other luggage retailers who do not provide their own in-house services.

In years past, consumers could bring their luggage, duffels, briefcases and handbags to a local shoe repair shop; now with today’s specialized parts and sophisticated equipment this is no longer an option. Alex Vetseyl commented that designs on luggage change every six months and he has seen major changes occur throughout the industry over the last ten years. With the ever increasing restrictions and fees associated with carry-on bags and luggage on airlines, it is even more critical to be organized and pack as efficiently as possible as you head out on your next trip.  Not only are manufacturers designing better carry-on bags and luggage to accommodate these needs, they are also providing travel accessories to make the job of getting organized easier.
