High Sierra has emerged as one of the preeminent luggage and travel goods companies. Having first arrived on the scene officially in 1978, High Sierra has grown to be one of the most recognized brands in outdoor, adventure and luggage goods. Today, it is one of the tenth largest outdoor companies in the US. But the idea for High Sierra was planted nearly 30 years earlier, when the company’s founder, Harry Bernbaum, began buying and selling Army surplus goods. Capitalizing on the new and growing sporting goods field, Bernbaum started in 1958 Seaway Importing Company that specialized in mass merchant sporting goods. After the company was sold, Bernbaum and his son Hank developed an idea for a new company and concept that would primarily focus on outdoor product lines. The new company would be known as H. Bernbaum Import & Export Company -- but only for the year 1978. The Bernbaums would quickly change the company’s name in 1979 to High Sierra to evoke more of an outdoor and sporty feel. In 1985, High Sierra entered into overseas production of canvas bags made from Dupont Cordura. Seizing on the popularity of the durable canvas bags, High Sierra branched out into luggage and soon offered product lines geared to adventure travelers, winter sports and sailing enthusiasts. Throughout the early 2000’s, High Sierra expanded these specialized lines and the brands’ popularity continued to grow. In 2002, High Sierra’s reputation for quality, well-designed adventure bags earned them the exclusive contract to be the official supplier to the U.S. Ski Team. Similarly, in 2004, they partnered with the U.S. Snowboard Team. High Sierra has also made a commitment to giving back to their community. Over the years, they have sponsored numerous charity events and community festivals. Protecting and caring for the environment has also been an important company value. In 2012, High Sierra moved its corporate operations to Gurnee, IL, to a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design building (LEED) in order to do their part in protecting and conserving the environment. The Bernbaums sold High Sierra to Samsonite in 2012. The company continues to be on the cutting edge of innovation and technology.
