Joseph S. Hartmann established the Hartmann Luggage Company in 1877 in Milwaukee, Wi, only 15 years after arriving from Bavaria, Germany. As a trunk maker, Hartmann quickly established a name for himself and his newly-founded company. Hartmann’s business grew and he moved operations to Racine, WI. in 1905. The expansion of the railway system across the US further fueled his business as people suddenly were on the move -- everywhere -- and needed steamer trunks for travel. By the 1930’s, people could chose from more than 800 models, sizes and colors of steamer trunks and luggage. The aluminum and steel framed luggage Hartmann was producing was durable, but with the onset of WWII, these materials were needed for the war. He moved to manufacturing luggage with a lightweight, basswood frame. In 1954, Hartmann luggage made its movie screen debut when James Bond carried a piece in the movie, Live and Let Die. Hartmann has always proved to be on the cutting edge of technology and consumer needs. They were the first to provide business travelers with the suitor case, hire fashion designers to spruce up their look, and use polycarbonate technology for ultra lightweight luggage. Today the company operates out of Lebanon, TN and continues to provide innovative, fashion-forward and functional luggage, business cases and belting leather bags and accessories.
